Celebrate Independence Day SML-style

No-wake initiative improves an already awesome lake tradition

In 2004, Winding Waters residents Dick and Martha Kleckner headed out by boat to the Independence Day Celebration at Parkway Marina, excited about their first opportunity to experience Smith Mountain Lake's annual by-boat fireworks tradition.

Unfortunately, the trip was anything but cause for celebration.

"It was a madhouse," Dick Kleckner said. "We took a wake over the bow that really scared us. The no-wake tradition has made the difference for us. Now we go whenever we can, usually with sons Tyler [24] and Jesse [26] and their friends along."

Those who wish to come by boat to this year's fireworks celebration, scheduled for July 3, can take comfort in the SML Water Safety Council's plan to again declare the primary viewing area a no-wake zone for the evening. The zone includes the viewing areas near Saunders Point and approximately a mile up each approach/departure channel.

"For the fifth year in a row, we're asking skippers to travel at idle-speed in the no-wake zone in order to preclude the unsafe and uncomfortable conditions that would result from wakes generated by boats running at planing or displacement speeds," said Randy Stow, WSC chairman.

While compliance with the temporary idle-speed-only restriction is voluntary, conservation police officers from Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries will be monitoring the area.

"All boaters should bear in mind that speeding through a highly congested area constitutes exceeding a safe speed for conditions and reckless operation of a motorboat," said Virginia Conservation Police Sgt. Bryan Young. "We'll be expecting everyone to use courtesy, patience and good common sense out there that evening."

The on-land portion of this year's event, a fund-raiser for the Saunders Volunteer Fire Company, will take place July 3 (rain date July 4) and will feature music, food vendors, displays of military and fire/rescue equipment and assorted children's activities. Parkway Marina's restored 1954 carousel will also be in operation on the scenic point. The over-water fireworks finale is slated to begin shortly after 9:30 p.m.

Parkway Marina is located a few miles past the entrance to the SML State Park (where Virginia 626 meets the lake). For more information, visit smlfireworks.org or call Parkway Marina at 540.297.4412.

Even More Fireworks Fun

Fireworks are also being planned for Mitchell's Point Marina.

"We had a professionally done show last year and everyone loved it," said owner Tom Buck. "Ours will be Sunday, July 4, so as not to conflict with the display at Parkway. This way, boaters can enjoy two nights of great fireworks."

Mitchell's Point, near marker C3, will also sponsor professional fireworks on the Saturdays of Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends. Parking for cars is available only for restaurant, marina and campground customers and their guests. Others wishing to enjoy the fireworks must come by boat.
