SMAC to sponsor flute/guitar recital

Music @ the Lake program is Aug. 15.

The Smith Mountain Arts Council's Special Events Committee will sponsor a flute/guitar recital on Sunday, Aug. 15 at the lakefront home of Will and Mary Hockersmith in Moneta.

Roanoke Symphony Orchestra flutist Julee Hickcox will be joined by guitarist Mike Havens for a classical program, Music @ the Lake, beginning at 3 p.m., Guests will have an opportunity to meet the artists, socialize and enjoy refreshments following the program.

Hickcox was born in Singapore, spent her early years in Hong Kong then moved to the United States with her family. She attended the North Carolina School of the Arts, where she studied flute. She also played both flute and piccolo regularly with the NCSA Symphony in the United States and Europe and the Winston-Salem and Salisbury (N.C.) symphony orchestras. She is a member of the Roanoke Symphony, the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra and performs regularly with several other orchestras, as well as for the Mill Mountain Theatre and Opera Roanoke.

Havens, a Roanoke native, has been playing guitar since he was 12. He received a degree in classical guitar from Radford University where he studied under Dr. Robert Trent. Upon graduation he was awarded a full scholarship for masters' degree study at the University of Cincinnati's Conservatory of Music. He teaches guitar and electronic music at Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke and gives private guitar lessons. He performs regularly as an acoustic and classical guitar soloist as well as with Hickcox, Con Eleganza and acoustic guitar duo Entre Nous.
