Mini-golf tournament organizer honoring late wife

Susan L. Heim died in 2002 after battling breast cancer.

For Ken Heim of Hardy, coordinator of the annual Smith Mountain Lake Good Neighbors Mini-Golf Tournament, this year's event will have special meaning. Heim is dedicating the Sept. 11 tournament to his late wife, Susan L. Heim, and has named the Susan L. Heim Memorial Fund a Platinum Sponsor.

"Susan died in December of 2002 after a 212-year battle with the return to breast cancer," said Heim. "She never complained and was always pleasant around everyone, even though she suffered intense pain every day. Susie was the bravest person that I have ever known."

Shots "Fore" Tots at Hot Shots Family Fun Center on Virginia 122 will include competition, door prizes, trophies and free hot dogs and beverages. Hot Shots' owner Jeff Schott has arranged for participants to vie for a spot in the Harris Cup Qualifying Tournament on Oct. 2 in Vestal, N.Y. The top 10 scorers in Shots "Fore" Tots will play an additional round to determine who will receive the all-expense-paid trip courtesy of Hot Shots. The Harris Cup offers a purse of $10,000.

Registration is $15 in advance and $18 at the door. Tickets can be purchased at Hot Shots, Trinity Ecumenical Parish, Radio Shack or from Heim. Rain date is Sept. 18.
