Chili in the air
Maybe it's the weather, typically sunny with a slight chill in the air; or the waterside location; or the hot and spicy food. Perhaps it's all three and the creative crafts on display that make the Smith Mountain Lake Fall Chili & Craft Festival the favorite of many lake-area residents.
Saturday's family-friendly event, the 10th, at Bridgewater Plaza is sponsored by the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce. About 22 cooker teams and 30 craft vendors are expected. Trophy presentations for the coveted Smith Mountain Lake's Best Chili 2012, People's Choice Chili and Outstanding Showmanship is scheduled for about 4 p.m. at Mango's stage.
Admission is $5 per person. Children 6 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult. The festival will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Chili-tasting begins at noon. Candy Top the clown will be on hand to greet the younger set.
Visitors can park free at Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta, about a mile from the bridge, and take a free shuttle sponsored by T-N-T Body Repair to the festival.
