SML volunteers assist Red Cross

American Red Cross volunteers from Franklin County (from left) Gloria Urias, George Urias, Breda McAuffe, Earl Mannoia and Melvin Hunt answered the call for assistance during the December snow storm, which caused widespread power and water outages across Southwest Virginia. The volunteers organized shelters for more than 500 persons including the elderly, children and the sick, and arranged and delivered approximately 1,000 meals a day. They coordinated closely with local officials to make sure they understood what was needed and to act as quickly as possible to help. All Red Cross disaster assistance is free and made possible by voluntary donations of time and money from the public. To help fund shelter, food, counseling and other assistance, send contributions to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, Roanoke Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross, 352 Church Ave., Roanoke VA. 24016.
