Moneta Lions support local music scholarship
Each year, the Moneta Lions Club helps sponsor the Virginia Lions Bland Memorial Scholarship Contest. The contest is named in honor of James Bland, composer of the Virginia state song, "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny."
This year, as in years past, the Moneta Lions will be combining efforts with the Bedford Host and Bedford Breakfast Lions to host a local contest which will be held Feb. 21 at Trinity Baptist Church in Bedford, starting at 2 p.m.
Participants compete in two categories, vocal or instrumental, affording them an opportunity to display their artistry and possibly win scholarships to further their education. Local winners will proceed to further competitions at the Lions Zone, District, and State levels.
In previous years, scholarships valued at $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000 have been awarded for the first three places in each category. This year's award levels have not yet been announced.
The contest is for individuals, though each performer is permitted one accompanist. While most performers are of high school age, younger students are encouraged to compete.
The Moneta Lions need help in identifying potential contestants. Music students, teachers and others are encouraged to contact Jim Smith at 297-1422 for additional information or to request registration forms.
