Fire on Lakemount Drive

The early morning fire was contained to the basement of the lake home.

An 83-year-old Moneta man was found dead at a waterfront home in the 900 block of Lakemount Drive after it caught fire in the early morning of Sept. 14.

A neighbor called 911 and reported the fire just after 7 a.m., according to Franklin County Fire Marshall Bennie Russell.

The fire was contained to the home’s basement, Russell said.

The homeowner, Franklin Roosevelt Arrington, was found deceased in his bed on the first floor of the home, Russell said. An autopsy will be conducted to see if Arrington died from smoke inhalation or another cause.

Scruggs Volunteer Fire Department, Burnt Chimney Volunteer Fire Department, Moneta Volunteer Fire Department, Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire Department and Franklin County Public Safety responded to the fire.

Russell said the cause of the fire is still unknown, and an investigation is ongoing.
