Now in its 29th year, the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour, held Oct. 11 through 13, is a great chance to explore Smith Mountain Lake while giving back.

Since its inception, the home tour has raised and distributed nearly $4 million to regional charities.

It’s a great opporutnity to see beautiful lakefront homes — either by land or by water — as well as gather construction, decorating and landscaping ideas.

The homes can be visited in any order, and on the following pages, you’ll find a list of directions by land and by water to help you. Traffic directors will be stationed at each home to help as well. By water, each of the homes can be identified by bright orange dock flags. By land, there is plenty of parking at the homes.

There are signs along the roads that mark the turns; however, using a GPS device is recommended, as well as a map of the lake. If you’re headed out by water, be prepared for the trip. Check the weather forecast and carry enough fuel on board, along with a fully charged phone and properly fitting life jackets for everyone on board.

And don’t worry about trying to visit all eight homes in one day. Home tour tickets are good all three days with one visit allowed per home. You can also take advantage of the numerous rest stops along the way.

The home tour is Oct. 11 through 13, rain or shine. Homes are open Friday and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets will be for sale at each of the homes on tour days. For advance tickets or to learn more about the charities the tour supports, visit www.smlcharityhometour.com.

DIRECTIONS BY WATER

By-water directions to the 2019 CHT homes begin at Hales Ford Bridge and are ordered to provide an efficient path to all eight homes. Note that homes retain their “numbers” from the by land directions. Your actual route will depend on where you elect to begin and which of the homes you decide to visit by boat.

Boaters should prepare for their day on the water by checking all safety equipment, fuel and oil levels and making sure there are properly-sized life jackets on deck–and preferably worn — by all crew members. Take along a fully charged cellphone, lake map, sunscreen and sufficient hydration. Dock only at docks clearly marked with an orange Home Tour dock banner or as directed by dock volunteers. Should you become stranded, Sea Tow stands by to assist at 540-719-5555. GPS coordinates provided below were recorded near each home’s dock but should be considered approximate, as are running times from one dock to the next. Allow extra time to await docking space, especially on Saturday.

#1. Breckinridge Home, 1250 Hidden Waters Lane, Moneta (GPS 37 06.655N; 79 37.681W): This trip will take about 15 minutes from Hales Ford Bridge at 25 mph. Beginning just below Hales Ford Bridge, travel downriver to marker R25, then carefully cross diagonally toward R24. Enter the cove about 200 yards beyond R24. Home is located deep in the cove. Following the cove, bearing left then right, the house is on the left with an eagle on the dock roof. Dock is limited to 3 spaces so there may be a wait. Look for orange flag on dock.

#2. Mallen Home, 19 Atlantic Ave., Moneta (GPS 37 05.038N; 79 37.581W): (About 10 minutes) Return to main channel and continue down river. Enter S-Curve at R21 and pass R19 and R17. As you exit S-Curve, steer toward water tower. Home (hidden from view behind trees as you approach) is white stone with light red brick trim around the windows. Look for orange flag on dock.

#4. Koury Home, 308 Pine Drive, Huddleston (GPS 37 03.932N; 79 33.487W): (About 18 minutes) Follow the Roanoke River channel downstream toward the dam, keeping marker R11 at Rabbit Island to your right side. Pass R8 on your left and Vista Point condos on your right. Go around the outermost island (closest to Smith Mountain) into mouth of Craddock Creek staying well wide of shoal markers near C1. Steer toward the spiral-striped lighthouse in Craddock Creek, near C2A. Pass Mitchell’s marina docks and enter the cove on your right. Continue down cove and look left for striped awnings and orange flag on the dock.

#3. Shea Home, 2422 Patmos Church Road, Huddleston (GPS 37 04.545N; 79 33. 595W): (About 5 minutes) Follow right hand shore out of the cove, entering Hatcher Creek toward H1 straight ahead next to the white gazebo. Turn right into the cove before the H1 marker. Home is straight ahead before the cove bends to the right. Orange dock flag will be visible in front of brown house with green trim.

#5. Kellstrom Home, 2222 Capewood Drive, Huddleston (GPS 37 03.449N; 79 32.614W): (About 15 minutes) Return to the main channel, heading toward the dam, passing Mitchell’s on the left and the lighthouse. Pass C2A on left, then C2 and R2, also on your left. After Passing the dam, bear left toward marker W1 on the left shore across from the dam. Pass W1 on your left and follow left hand shore into the left cove, then go straight ahead to tall beige home with large “K” and orange flag on the dock.

#6. Nester Home, 715 Tranquility Road, Moneta (GPS 37 02.648N; 79 36.656W): (About 18 minutes) Return to the main channel, passing the dam on your left and R2 to your right. Cross the big bay toward Vista Pointe Resort (tall white building ahead). Pass R4, then R6 on your right and leave Vista Pointe and marker B1 to your left. Carefully cross the channel, keeping Bernard’s Landing condos on your right. Target cove is directly across the channel. Look for orange flag on second covered dock on left hand shore as you enter the cove.

#7. Thompson Home, 257 Dudley Road, Union Hall (GPS 37 02.224N; 79 39.715W): (About 14 minutes) Exit the cove and turn right to continue up the Blackwater. You’ll soon pass B2/4/6/8 in quick succession as the channel bends west, passing Christmas Tree Island on your left. Continue up the Blackwater, passing B10A on your right. Pass B13 and angle left around Lucky Island. Look ahead on opposite shore for an old-style enclosed white boathouse on a point; target dock is two to the right of that. Look for orange flag on the dock.

#8. Borum Home, 3576 Kemp Ford Road, Union Hall (GPS 37 02.460N; 79 41.204W): (About 10 minutes) Head back out to Blackwater channel and turn left, upriver. Pass B19 on your left, giving it a wide berth to avoid oncoming traffic. Follow the Blackwater’s right-hand shore as you round B22 and continue upriver. Pass B24 then angle across the channel toward B23 (B23 is UPRIVER from B24, a quirk on this section of the Blackwater). Home is third on the right hand shore of the cove at B23. Look for orange flag on the dock.

Direct run back to Hales Ford Bridge would take about 50 minutes. Gas is available at Gills Creek Marina (at Marker G2), Crazy Horse Marina (to left between B12 and B10) and the Virginia Dare Marina as you exit the S-curve.
