Participants of all ages lined up early for the seventh annual Diamond Dig on Aug. 17 at Haywood’s Jewelers at Westlake Towne Center for a chance to find a 1.32-carat round diamond, as well as more than 1,000 other diamonds and gemstones buried in a giant sandbox.
Buckets were sold at $35 apiece with proceeds supporting the American Cancer Society.
This year’s goal was to raise $17,000, according to Haywood’s owner Joanna Gruver.
Since its inception, the Diamond Dig has raised $70,000 for the nonprofit, Gruver said.
Before the dig ended Saturday afternoon, Gina Kennett found the grand prize diamond, according to a post on the Haywood’s Facebook page.
