Dollar Energy Fund and Appalachian Power Company will host the second annual Fishing for a Cause tournament at Parkway Marina in Huddleston on May 5.
The event is made possible through a partnership between Appalachian and Conrad Brothers Marine.
Last year, more than 75 boats participated in the tournament and raised $20,150, including a match from Appalachian Power. Funds raised in the tournament are used to help limited-income customers to help maintain or restore basic electric service through the company’s Neighbor to Neighbor Program in Virginia.
“This year we are hoping for much of the same fun on the lake and community benefit,” said Dwight Linkous, Appalachian’s customer services coordinator.
The entry fee is $100 per boat for up to two anglers, and there will be cash prizes for the greatest total weight (payout is one for every seven boats), as well as a raffle prize of $5,000 available to anyone who registers for the tournament — regardless of whether or not they catch a fish, Linkous said.
Lunch will be served during weigh-ins, in addition to prizes for children who attend.
“Registration is currently open online,” said Jessica Gunjak, Dollar Energy’s fundraising director. “All proceeds from the event are matched dollar for dollar by Appalachian Power and distributed in the community to help local residents maintain or restore basic utility services.”
Anglers can register the day of the tournament or online. Registration and check-in begins at 6 a.m., and all teams are required to be at the boat ramp 30 minutes before the tournament starts at 7 a.m.
