The 14th annual Johnny CASA 5 Miler/5K Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 21 at 9 a.m. in Rocky Mount.
As in previous years, participants are encouraged to dress as their favorite superhero and also wear bells that are provided on their shoes.
Proceeds will benefit the Southern Virginia Child Advocacy Center. Established in 2001, the center provides a comprehensive, interdisciplinary response to children impacted by immediate and long-term trauma associated with abuse and neglect.
The race course begins on South Main Street at the intersection with Church Street before taking a left onto North Main Street. Participants will cross Angle Bridge and continue on North Main Street until 5K participants turn around at Rocky Mount Fire Department.
Participants in the 5-miler continue along North Main to the entrance into Benjamin Franklin Middle School. They follow the road to a turnaround point before heading back the same way. Participants then go past the starting line to take a right onto Floyd Avenue followed by a right on Bank Street to the finish line in the back parking lot of the Southern Virginia Child Advocacy Center.
Trophies will be presented to three male and female finishers and to the top male and female masters winners (age 40 and older). Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in 14 age groups.
Registration is now open at www.active.com and is $25 until a $5 increase on Dec. 16. The event will be held rain or shine.
