Cold, rainy weather didn’t deter dozens from showing up to an early morning rally Thursday to support a passenger train stop in Bedford.

Organized by the Bedford/Franklin Regional Rail Initiative committee, the Next Stop Bedford event featured supporters holding signs that read “stop here” and carrying suitcases as the Amtrak train passed through Bedford on its way from Roanoke to Lynchburg.

Advocates have been pushing for a stop in Bedford for several years and have helped fund a study to justify their proposal. State officials are skeptical of the need, however, and have said they need two years of data from the newly established passenger service to Roanoke to consider whether a stop in Bedford is justified, given the cost of building a new station.
