Joseph H. Vipperman Visitors Center at the Smith Mountain Dam

The Joseph H. Vipperman Visitors Center at the Smith Mountain Dam will be closed until Oct. 5 while Appalachian Power conducts road maintenance.

The Joseph H. Vipperman Visitors Center and adjacent observation area at Smith Mountain Dam are closed temporarily while Appalachian Power conducts maintenance work on the road leading to the site.

The visitors center provides a history about the project while the observation area provides a bird’s-eye view of the dam.

Work on the road began Sept. 30 and is scheduled to end Oct. 4. The visitors center will reopen Oct. 5 at 9 a.m.

A public picnic area just below the dam on Leesville Lake is not affected by the road closure.
