Moneta Garden Club will hold a Blue Star Marker Memorial Dedication Service on May 18 at 11 a.m. at Moneta/SML Library, 13641 Moneta Road in Moneta.

Undertaken in conjunction with the Bedford Public Library System and the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, the dedication is a tribute to the United States armed forces.

In 1945, National Council of State Garden Clubs adopted the Blue Star Highway System. The project was named for the Blue Star Service flags and banners that were displayed in front windows of homes to honor family members and other service members away at war.

The first marker was designed in 1947. While the markers originally honored World War II veterans, National Garden Clubs enlarged its mission in 1951 to include all men and women who had served, were serving or would serve in the United States armed forces.

The highway program was expanded to memorial markers and by-way markers to be placed at national cemeteries, parks, public organizations and gardens.

The dedication, which will include noted speakers, music and refreshments, is free and open to the public.
