The Smith Mountain Striper Club is once again encouraging local anglers to try catching fish other than stripers this summer with its second annual Perch Jerk competition.
During summer months, catching and releasing stripers results in a high mortality rate for them. The club would like anglers to fish for white perch instead and is offering them a chance to attend an end-of-tournament fish fry and an opportunity to win cash and prizes.
This event runs through Sept. 15 and is free and open to anyone. For every 10 perch that anglers contribute, they will receive one ticket for a chance to win more than $1,000 in cash and prizes at the fish fry.
The fish fry will be Sept. 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. at W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center in Wirtz.
Anglers who contribute perch can attend the fish fry for free; for others the cost is $8.
