Clayton and Sarah Payne were named new pastors of Redwood United Methodist Church on June 30.
The couple previously served in Staunton area churches and have been involved in pastoral ministry for the past 10 years. The Paynes will assume the post following the departure of longtime pastor Brad Dulaney.
Clayton Payne’s emphasis will be in worship and connectional leadership, while Sarah will serve the church in transformational and community outreach.
The Paynes said they are eager to get to know the church and the community of Redwood.
“We are very excited in getting to know everyone and hearing what they love about Redwood,” Sarah Payne said. “I definitely see a purpose in God bringing us to Redwood. Both Clayton and I have different, yet complementary, gifts; it’s a nice balance, and we hope to build upon what is already an energized and vital church that is dedicated toward connecting the unconnected.”
The couple will help fulfill Redwood’s current goals of completing the first phase of the Redwood Outreach Center, supporting the church’s structural leadership and embracing diversity.
Completing the center will enable the church to reach more people in mission and serve as a connection in the community. The couple said they sense that the church is well-positioned to reach residents in Rocky Mount, as well as new lake residents. The Paynes are enthusiastic about participating in the church’s ministries and community outreach.
The couple have been married for 12 years and have a son, Cody. Clayton Payne is a native of Las Vegas, Nevada while Sarah is from Bristol, Tennessee. Both attended seminary at Eastern Mennonite University. Clayton Payne is pursuing his doctorate at United Theological in Dayton, Ohio.
Redwood United Methodist Church is located at 3001 Old Franklin Turnpike in Rocky Mount.
