Virginia State Police are investigating two crashes on Aug. 13 that resulted in fatalities, according to a news release from Sgt. Rick Garletts.

The first crash occurred at 1:03 p.m. on Aug. 13 when a 2005 Ford Taurus turning left from U.S. 220 onto Starlight Lane near Boones Mill failed to yield the right of way and was struck by a 2014 Buick Regal traveling north on U.S. 220, Garletts said.

The passenger of the Ford, Jean Young Mattox, 86, of Rocky Mount died at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Garletts said. She and the Ford’s driver, Irene Young Shively, also of Rocky Mount, were both wearing seat belts.

The driver of the Buick, Oliver L. Steiner, 69, of Rocky Mount, also was wearing his seat belt. He was transported to the hospital with injuries, Garletts said.

The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team was called to help with the crash, which is under investigation.

The second crash that resulted in a fatality occurred at the intersection of Virginia 122 and Hardy Road around 7:40 p.m., Garletts said.

A 2001 Nissan Sentra driven by Madison Shyanne Keaton, 24, of Hardy, was traveling east on Hardy Road when it failed to yield the right of way at the intersection of Virginia 122, Garletts said.

Keaton’s vehicle was struck by a 1996 Jeep Cherokee. Keaton, who was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, Garletts said.

The crash reconstruction team also was called to help with this crash, which is under investigation as well, Garletts said.
